The Ersatz Elevator is the 6th novel by Lemony Snicket. It is about the Baudelaires who are living with their new guardians:Jerome and Esme Squalor. Esme is always talking about what's in and what's out and one day she tells the kids and Jerome to go out for dinner,so she could discuss the IN auction with Stephanio. After They come from dinner and the doorman doesn't allow them in because Stephanio didn't come out of the building.
Personally I don't like the series, but you had a great summary.
